What to Do Before Windows 7 Reaches End of Support

Microsoft will be ending support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020. The move to Windows 10 requires change and we understand the challenge it will be for those who have been using the older operating system for the past decade. This is why we are here to help you with a few tips and insights on how to make the transition. Our team is at work every day helping our customers make the change and we can assist you with any issues or questions you may have .

What Does End of Support for Windows 7 Mean?

Although End of Support for Windows 7 is nearing, Windows is offering a final update with pop-up reminders to download and install Microsoft’s next version before then. When Windows 7 reaches end of support in January 2020, your computer will still function but Microsoft will no longer provide the following:
        • Software updates
        • Security updates or fixes
        • Technical support

If you are a a part of the 39% of PCs that still currently use Windows 7, you could continue using it, however, without continued security and software updates, your device will be at a higher risk for viruses and malware. The best way for you to stay secure and protect your data is by updating to Windows 10. The best way to experience Windows 10 is on a new PC, providing faster updates and less downtime offline. It is possible to install Windows 10 on your older PC model, but it is not recommended.

If you do decide to stay with the current version, or if you choose to upgrade to Windows 10, ABS is here to support you through this transition. We want to share some helpful tips on the ways to keep your data secure through the process and make it as smooth of a shift as possible.

1. Back up your data, including files and photos

Before you embark on updating your software from Windows 7 to Windows 10, it is imperative that you back up your data. There are many benefits to updating your software, but one of the biggest mistakes you can make during this process is losing your date due to poor backup. The easiest way to securely backup your date to ensure you will not experience any loss is through OneDrive, Google Drive, or even a USB flash drive if your amount of data allows it. It is always better to be safe than sorry- which is why data backup is so important during this process but on a regular basis as well.

2. Check out the latest PC Models

The newest model PCs are not only fast and durable with batteries that provide longer life, but the average price for a great PC is considerably less than it was a decade ago. A newer PC will allow Windows 10 to work at its best capacity and provide the maximum benefit to your organization. Older PC models have to work harder to keep up with the latest software and do not allow it to operate at its fastest and most efficient rate. Windows has some great options for new PCs that won’t break your bank and will permit Windows 10 to work the most effectively.

3. Out with the Outdated and In with the Upgraded

We think you’ll enjoy Window 10 to its fullest on a new PC, but with any major technological transition, it can be a challenge to adjust to. Our goal is for our customers to be as prepared as possible when end of support does some for Windows 7 users.
