Tip 5.1 Deciding the correct type of network

There are many types of networks available in today’s marketplace. Each has their own benefit and a business owner or individual user should really examine what your needs are before deciding on a network.

What do I have to choose from?

These computer networking resources are your gateway to the world of connecting computers. Topics include Windows and home networking, LAN/WAN, TCP/IP, hardware, software, cabling, and more.

Basic TCP/IP- One of the oldest and most widely used network protocols, TCP/IP is a fundamental computer networking technology. Several computers in a small department can use TCP/IP (along with other protocols) on a single LAN. The IP component provides routing from the department to the enterprise network, then to regional networks, and finally to the Internet.

Windows 2000 and NT - Windows 2000 and Windows NT support a wide range of home networking options including file and printer sharing, ICS, firewalls and other security measures, and more.

Linux/Unix – Unix is a well-established networking power house. In fact, Unix is the workhorse of the Internet. All of the protocols and services that the Internet were originally based on were developed on Unix. Because of the maturity of Unix, it has already gone through the growing pains that are now plaguing NT, such as security and crash problems. Until the advent of Linux, there was no inexpensive, powerful Unix available for the home.

Novell NetWare - The NetWare operating system from Novell, Inc. supports file and print serving as well as other advanced networking functions. The NetWare operating system supports the networking of personal computers (PCs). Installed on a PC, NetWare creates a server environment for the sharing of files, printers, and other network "services."
