What's New  - The ABC's of DSL

Well, by now most of us have heard of DSL and understand that this new technology provides faster internet connections.  However, this is where most people's understanding ends.  We want to take this opportunity to teach you the ABC's of DSL.
DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line.  This technology uses your existing phone lines and gives you download speeds of up to 50 times faster than normal dial-up connections.  DSL also allows you to be on the internet and talk on the phone at the same time.
So, how does it work?  A DSL modem is used to expand the capabilities of your existing phone line.  This modem splits your phone line into two fre

website will want to investigate this technology.  Although the connection is slower than ADSL, it is more consistent because it is a dedicated line.  Three things can prevent you from qualifying for either of these services:  1) the switch in your area uses fiber optics 2) Bell South has installed a static-reducing loaded copper loop on your phone line or 3) you are more than 1.5 miles from a switch.  In these cases you will have to use the third option which is IDSL.  If you would like more info, please give us a call.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in our previous survey.  Last issue's question was "What is the most important quality that your technical service provider should possess?"  Here are the results:
Quality Work  -  43%
Quick Response  -  29%
Affordability  -  14%
Friendliness  -  14%
We want all of our clients to know that we are constantly striving to provide a service that encompasses all of these qualities and more.  We also want to educate our clients about current technological developments.  That leads us to this issue's survey question:  "Would you attend a free seminar designed to educate you about DSL?"

There are three flavors of DSL.  The first is ADSL, which provides the fastest connection speeds at the lowest cost.  However, it is a shared bandwidth technology.  This means that your connection speed can vary.  About 90% of you will want to investigate ADSL before considering any other options.  The next variation is SDSL.  Anyone who is hosting their own

This month's tech tips gives you a few troubleshooting steps if you are experiencing modem problems, specifically if it seems that you are not getting a dial tone or the modem isn't working at all.  First, using your mouse, click on the start button and go to 'settings' and then to control panel.  Inside the control panel double click the modem icon.  Once the modem properties window opens, click on the diagnostics tab.  There should be two columns  - 'Port' and 'Installed'.  Find your modem under the 'Installed' column.  Highlight the 'Com' setting next to your mo

dem and then click the 'More Info' button.  If a message appears stating that communication could not be established, contact the person who handles repairs for your company.  If it returns information inside a 'More Info' window, then you know that your computer is communicating properly with your modem.  Now you want to check to make sure your phone line is connected to your computer and in the wall jack properly.  You can also take a phone and plug it into the wall jack to make sure the line is working.  Finally, if these steps don't isolate the problem, call us!
